Verifying identity identifier transmitted by an aerial vehicle

A wireless communication receiver is used to receive a wireless signal that identifies an identifier transmitted by an aircraft. A token value and a vehicle identifier are obtained from the received transmitted identifier. A secret corresponding to the vehicle identifier is obtained. A synchronized time value is obtained. A comparison token value is generated using the secret and the synchronized time value. The obtained token value and the generated comparison token value are compared to determine an authenticity of the received transmitted identifier.

Aerial vehicle identification beacon and reader system

A system for identifying an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) detected in a location includes a reader device. The reader device includes a receiver configured to receive identification information transmitted from the UAV, and a transmitter configured to provide the received identification information to an identification server. The identification server includes a memory configured to store UAV registration information associated with the UAV, a receiver configured to receive the identification information provided by the reader device, and a processor configured to provide a verification of the identification information received by the reader based on the provided identification information and the stored UAV registration information.

A computer-implemented method comprises detecting, by one or more sensors, at least one object in an airspace to generate a detection output; for the at least one object being registered as a drone, obtaining, by an identification friend or foe (IFF) system, information associated with the at least one object, to generate an IFF output; based on the detection output and the IFF output, determining at least one of a class and an identity of the at least one object, to generate code information; and based on the code information, generating and transmitting a high power, long distance signal configured to be received by a high power, long distance aircraft.

Secure beacon and reader system for remote drone and pilot identification

The system may include a reader having a receiver configured to receive identification information, and a transmitter configured to re-transmit the received identification information; and an identification server having a memory storing UAS registration information, a receiver configured to receive transmissions, a transmitter to transmit information and a processor configured to provide a verification of the identification information received by the reader based on the re-transmitted identification information and the stored UAS registration.

Autonomous vehicles performing inventory management

An inventory management system managing a plurality of inventory items stored in a storage area. The inventory management system includes an autonomous vehicle configured to move within the storage area and a computing device communicatively coupled to the autonomous vehicle. The autonomous vehicle includes a beacon configured to facilitate detection of a current position of the autonomous vehicle based on signal triangulation, a sensor configured to detect information indicative of a number of inventory items at the current position of the autonomous vehicle, and a wireless data link configured to transmit a signal indicative of the number of inventory items. The computing device may detect a position of the autonomous vehicle based on the signal transmitted from the beacon, and update an inventory of the storage area based on the signal indicative of the number of inventory items.

An autonomous quadrotor avoiding a helicopter in low-altitude flights

Recent advances in sensing and computing technology has made unmanned aerial vehicles/systems (UAV/UAS) low cost but still increasingly capable of executing complex missions in challenging environments. They have gained popularity in a vast range of civilian applications, including search and rescue, disaster relief, and filming. Recently, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on UAS certifications, indicating that a large number of UAS will be present in the National Airspace System (NAS) in the near future. The NASA UTM project is an effort on enabling low-altitude UAS flights. Big value envisaged by Amazon Prime Air happens only when the drone is able to fly itself tens of miles from the distribution center to peoples homes autonomously. One prerequisite for such flights is collision avoidance. Our research aims at drones that travel in class G airspace. This article is an exploration of the drone collision avoidance problem in urban areas. The main contribution is a safety control framework that enables a UAS to perform collision avoidance with manned aircraft during autonomous navigation.

A low altitude aircraft identification system

Example implementations associated with the aspects of the present invention include a low altitude aircraft identification system composed by three components: a small aircraft electronic identification box with an embedded logger, a ground identification equipment to automatically identify the aircraft just pointing at it, and an identification code database. The identification code can be transmitted by a visible light color sequence or by a radio frequency signal. The ground identification device is capable of recognizing both kinds of code.

Drones in smart cities: Overcoming barriers through air traffic control research

Within the last decade, the recent automation of vehicles such as cars and planes promise to fundamentally alter the microeconomics of transporting people and goods. In this paper, we focus on the self-flying planes (drones), which have been renamed Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) by the US Federal Aviation Agency (FAA). The most controversial operations envisaged by the UAS industry are small, low-altitude UAS flights in densely populated cities - robotic aircraft flying in the midst of public spaces to deliver goods and information. This subset of robotic flight would be the most valuable to the nations economy, but we argue that it cannot happen without a new generation of air traffic control and management services. This paper presents a cloud based system for city-wide unmanned air traffic management, prototype sensor systems required by city police to keep the city safe, and an analysis of control systems for collision avoidance.

An Unmanned Aerial Traffic Management solution for cities using an air parcel model

The Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) market once belonged to professional companies only. Now many amateur pilots fly cheap, smartphone controlled models available in any electronic store. Due to altitude, speed, and weight, these flying objects can cause damage and injury. Hence, a way to manage them is necessary. This paper presents a UAS Traffic Management (UTM) system comprising three components: a UAS electronic identification plate with an embedded logger, a ground identification equipment, and a Traffic Routing System (TRS). This UTM system uses the air parcel model, which divides the low altitude airspace in a 3-D air parcel map. In this system, land parcel owners possess the airspace above their real estate and approve or disallow overflights. The adoption of the described UTM allows cities to control UASs, to detect non-compliant flights, and to identify pilots.

P-means, a parallel clustering algorithm for a heterogeneous multi-processor environment

G-means is a data mining clustering algorithm based on k-means, used to find the number of Gaussian distributions and their centers inside a multi-dimensional dataset. This paper presents the performance gain obtained from the development of a parallel G-means algorithm for a heterogeneous multi-processor environment using the StarSs framework, called here P means. The P-means execution was divided into 6 well defined steps, where each step was analyzed to create a hierarchical task structure in order to parallelize the execution enabling it to explore the hierarchy and heterogeneity of the Cell BE blades and others heterogeneous architectures. The algorithm implementation was also adapted to perform sequential timing measures to evaluate the Amdahls law, to compare the theoretical calculation and the execution times measurements and to introduce parallel computation by using the StarSs framework. The algorithm was executed using a 30 clusters dataset containing 600 thousand points of 60 dimensions in different hardware configurations in order to compare its execution time and speedup, and it showed a overall speedup of more than 18 times. A successful experimentation with real data demonstrated the usefulness of the algorithm.

Player Tracker - a tool to analyze sport players using RFID

A work in progress of a tool designed to help sports coaches to analyze their players using an RFID technology connected to a 3-layer software is described in this paper. A few ranging techniques available in conventional RFID systems were studied to best fit this application scenario. Together with the RFID equipments, there is a 3-layer system managing all the data. The software bottom layer is responsible for the low-level communication between the software and the hardware. The middle layer is the system engine where all the calculation is performed. Finally, the top layer is the software part responsible for showing reports and the player analyzed. The system has 2 tracking modes, one for 2D player location in the field, and a 3D mode to capture players movement in small area sports. It has 2 report modes also, one for real-time report displaying each players actual location in the field; and the other to present reports with statistics of the player such as distance covered, a heat map of the field showing where the player is at a time interval and number of sprints.

Cell BE and Bluetooth applied to Digital TV

This paper presents the results of a research in progress about a system for multiple users behavior analysis and program recommendation for digital TV called SmarTV. The research explores a multi-users behavior analysis and program recommendation using Bluetooth cell phones and a Playstation 3 working as a set-top box connected to a digital TV network with return channel or an IPTV network. Supposing that every viewer has a Bluetooth enabled cell phone, each mobile will identify one spectator to the set-top box wirelessly. Since the set-top box used is a Playstation 3, it is a full computer with IBM Cell BE processor capable of executing computer-intensive algorithms. This device was used to store the history of programs watched by every person near the TV connected to the set-top box, and to identify their profile and preferences using data mining algorithms. The program recommendation system is a hybrid of a content-based approach with a collaborative approach using a rate system, and uses the k-Means and k-NN data mining algorithms modified to explore the Cell BE features.

PeSoV - Pervasive software-oriented vehicles

This paper presents an architecture using new emerging technologies to increase the security, reliability and connectivity of motorized vehicles. Many people die because car accidents caused by lack of attention and imprudence of car drivers. Some technologies like the standard IEEE 1609, Zigbee and a network of ranging sensors can be used as tools to help the driver to avoid accidents. PeSoV is composed of three subsystems: a car health management subsystem responsible to care about the good function of the car; a car-car communication subsystem responsible to allow the communication between cars; and a collision predict subsystem that will warn the driver in case of an possible collision.

An RFID Bulk Cargo Supervising System

In this work, a system using active RFID tags to supervise truck bulk cargo is described. The tags are attached to the bodies of the trucks and readers are distributed in the cargo buildings and attached to weighs and the discharge platforms. PDAs with camera and support to a WiFi network are provided to the inspectors and access points are installed throughout the discharge area to allow effective confirmations of unload actions and the acquisition of pictures for future audit. Broadband radio equipments are used to establish efficient communication links between the weighs and cargo buildings which are usually located very far from each other in the field. A Web application software was especially developed to enable robust communication between the equipments for efficient device management, data processing and reports generation to the operating personal. The system was deployed in a cargo station of a Brazilian seashore port. The obtained results prove the effectiveness of the proposed system.

PeWeMoS - Pervasive Weather Monitoring System

This paper presents a innovative system for weather monitoring using one device called WeBo, equipped with weather sensors and GPS, placed on buses ceiling to measure weather variables like humidity, temperature and air quality during the bus path. The weather variables are stored together with the latitude and longitude of the measure place and the exact time of measurement. WeBo synchronize its data with all other WeBos met during the path due a Bluetooth radio. This same radio is used to upload the data when the bus arrives in the terminal to a server called TeCo. The data downloaded by TeCo is transmitted to a main server and processed by a system called SysCo. With the information captured by the buses during the day, SysCo can generate reports of points in the city where the temperature is above the normal, and places where the air quality is inappropriate.

A new approach for vehicle access control using active RFID tags

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an emerging technology with many different applications. In this paper, results obtained from the use of an active RFID system for trucks access control will be presented. Using a directive antenna with a reader and a middleware with RSSI feature, it is possible to make the system much more accurate than in conventional approaches, avoiding most reading problems and making the system more robust. A comparison between the system with and without these resources is shown in the text.
